Why Chiropractic?
I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine and from a young age suffered from asthma and bronchitis. My mother did her best to help me through natural remedies such as poultices, compresses, herbal teas and massage. Growing up in Ukraine the use of natural remedies was the norm and only when symptoms were bad enough would they go to the doctor; but nevertheless the doctor was the authority. So along with the natural remedies my mother made me use an inhaler and sometimes cough syrup. We moved to the United States as a family when I was 8 years old and I still suffered with asthma. I could only run a short distance before my lungs would constrict making it difficult to breath. A few years later my mother decided to take me off the inhaler, I do not remember what else she did but over the course of several months my asthma began to go away. We claim I “grew out of it” but I would still get sick regularly every year since I had a weak immune system.
Around 12-13 years old I remember I suffered from persistent low back pain and occasional headaches. Hearing somewhere about chiropractic I asked my mother to take me there since “they fix backs”. So we signed up as a family and went bi-weekly for about 3 months. Our whole family saw results; my mothers vision and headaches got better, my headaches and back pain went away and my ability to heal was much improved. What I learned there made a lasting impression on my view of health and the goals for my future.
My chiropractor taught me that my body is designed to heal itself and does it best with an optimally functioning nervous system. This made sense to me. Growing up in a Christian family and later testing the faith to find whether it’s true led me to believe that the God of the Bible created this earth and our bodies. Studying anatomy and other health sciences further cemented this belief by exploring the vast complexity of the human body. So when I heard the body can heal itself given the capacity I understood that.
I have always been sympathetic towards other peoples’ pain and suffering making me want to help them. After wanting to pursue chiropractic when I was 13 I decided to first learn massage therapy. This was a great learning experience for me because it enabled me to be able to help people at a muscular level although at times it was deeper than that. But I felt led to help people at a higher capacity. So my wife and I decided I would pursue chiropractic and see where it leads. I am excited to be on this journey and enjoy the learning experience equipping me to better help others.
